Macbeth tells Banquo that if the Witches' prophecy comes true and he becomes the next King of Scotland, he would give Banquo honours if he chose to support him. What does Banquo say in response? Explain in your own words.
"So I lose none / In seeking to augment it, but still keep / My bosom franchised and my allegiance clear / I shall be counsell'd" = as long as I don't have to do anything that goes against my morals/conscience, I will support you if you become king.
When Macbeth tells his wife that he heard a voice say that he shall "sleep no more", he talks about why sleeping peacefully is very important. In your own words, list two reasons he gives as to WHY getting a good night's sleep is important.
- "the death of each day's life" = sleep should end each day so that the cycle can begin again
- "sore labour's bath" = helps us heal from hard work
- "balm of hurt minds" = makes us feel better when we are suffering emotionally
- "great nature's second course / Chief nourisher in life's feast" = day is the first course, but sleep is the second course and is the most nourishing, meaning a good night's sleep is needed for us to mentally and physically prepare for each new day
