What is the difference between essential and non-essential information?

An Essential Clause is a clause containing information that a reader must know to interpret a sentence. If removed, the meaning of the sentence changes or becomes unclear. Essential clauses do not require commas.

Nonessential Clauses add information, but they do not change the meaning of a sentence. Nonessential clauses require commas.
