What is the difference between plate tectonics and continental drift?
Continental drift was an early theory with unproven, unaccepted evidence. Plate tectonics was an improved, well supported theory.
Explain the process of subduction.
Subduction is when two plates collide, then the more dense of the two plates sinks below the other.
Explain seafloor spreading.
Seafloor spreading is controlled by convection currents, and causes the crust to separate from each other into separate parts. This creates new crust at the ridge.
WHAT IS SCIENCE?????
SCIENCE!!!!>:DDDD
What was the name of the supercontinent?
Pangea
What are the 3 types of plate boundaries? What feature does each create?
Convergent - usually mountains
Divergent - usually volcanoes
Transform - usually earthquakes
Where are convection currents located and what do they do?
These currents are located in the mantle. They constantly move the tectonic plates as the warm and cold currents rotate in a circular motion.
What was unique about the continent shapes?
Most of the shapes seemed to allow the continents to fit together nicely, like a puzzle.
Explain what a mid-ocean ridge is.
Solidified molten material (lava) from the mantle that forms an underwater mountain range.
What 3 pieces of evidence did Alfred Wegener use to support his theory of continental drift?
He used rocks, fossils, and climate data.
Which of the 3 types of convergent boundaries does not involve subduction?
Continent to continent - usually creates mountains
Where is the magma, crust, and mid-ocean ridge located in the diagram below?
Mid-ocean ridge - top
Crust - middle
Magma - bottom
What were the 2 main reasons Alfred Wegener’s continental drift hypothesis was rejected?
What force caused the movement of the continents - Couldn't prove how fast they were moving
