Steps to care for a suspected spinal rescue by the lifeguards
Primary: identify possible spinal injury, clear the pool slowly with 2 long whistles and ‘X’ over LG’s head, ease in entry, approach guest and place in underarm vise grip, switch grip to overarm vise grip once backboard arrives, maintain SMR and communication with guest, apply head blocks.
Secondary: brings in backboard, sinks board under GiD and applies straps (chest, hips, thighs), takes over SMR with squeeze play.
Both: remove from pool once secured to backboard. Communicate who had SMR the entire time. Communicate with the GiD

All steps we will take in a major medical emergency that happens in the pool
Lifeguard activates EAP with appropriate whistle code & initiates the rescue.
Other lifeguard/Off stand/DS covers the zone that the lifeguard on stand left behind and sounds 2 long whistles if a rapid is called for.
As soon as 2 long whistles are heard, the Front Desk will call 911 & Go Bag will be brought to the scene.
Swim Instructors get their students out of the water, grab their roll sheets, and take swimmers off the pool deck to private showers.
GiD is extricated from the pool.
Responders apply PPE while one LG gives 2 ventilations and starts primary check. As soon as a LG has gloves on, they take over care
Responders determine the type of Basic Life Support needed and the appropriate equipment for the rescue. BLS is provided until EMS arrives & takes over the scene.
Simultaneously, DS and/or Manager assigns roles to assist in the rescue.
Escort families out of the facility using the back exit once swimmers have been returned to their guardians.
Follow up with EMS and record all information in an incident report.
Debrief as a team
Name the responsibilities for the FD in a major emergency
Call 911, get the go bag to the scene, crowd control, ensuring EMS has a clear path to the GiD
Steps we would take if there was a missing child?
Immediately let a manager know, have someone stay with the guardian to reassure them, all available staff start searching the facility, bottom of pool is scanned immediately, check ALL rooms.
If not found in the first sweep, music is stopped and an announcement is made that we have a missing child with a brief description of their appearance. Service at FD will be halted so more people can search & 911 will be called
