What if...?
100
What are the layers of the Earth in order from the outside to the center? (you better get this right)
1. The Crust 2. The Mantle 3. The Outer Core 4. The Inner Core
100
Name the three types of volcanoes.
Cinder cone, Shield cone, and Composite.
100
What is a fault plane?
A fault plane is the flat surface along which there is slip during an earthquake
100
What if the plates stopped moving?
There would be less volcanic activity and no more earthquakes and mouintains would not form.
200
What is the lithosphere?
It is the crust and the upper most layer of the mantle.
200
Which plate is subducting in the Ring of Fire?
The Pacific plate is being subducted under the Philippene and Eurasian sea plates forming the Marianna Trench. It is also being subducted under the North American Plate forming the Aleutian Trench.
200
What is the difference between a focus and an epicenter?
The focus is inside the Earth where the earthquake starts. The epicenter is the place on the surface that is directly above the focus.
200
What if a crustal plate stopped moving over a "hot spot"?
A volcanoe would form and continue to build up over the years.
300
Why is the Inner Core Solid?
The Inner Core is solid because it is under immense pressure.
300
What is the opening at the top of a volcano called?
It is called a caldera.
300
What is a synonym for hypocenter? (think of Greek and Latin) A. Focus B. Epicenter C. Fault plane
Focus
300
What if the Earth had no crust?
There would be no water because it would evaporate. There would also be no life because it would be too hot.
400
If oceanic crust subducts beneath continental crust, which is more dense?
Oceanic crust is more dense.
400
What planet is the biggest volcano on? A. Earth B. Mars C. Venus
C. Mars. The giant shield volcano is called Olympus Mons. It has an elevation of 27km and measures 550km across. It got so big because it has been standing over a hot spot for over a billion years.
400
What is the Richter Scale?
The Richter scale is the scale that measures the energy released by an earthquake.
400
What if the center of the earth were to cool down?
The Earth might shrink a little bit because as things become cooler they become a little more dense. The plates would also slow down because the convection currents would move slower.
500
How do we know that the Outer Core of the Earth is Liquid?
We know that the Outer Core of the Earth is liquid based seismic readings. Seismic waves bend and reflect at the interface between different materials.
500
On what continent are there no active volcanoes?
Australia. This is because no plate boundaries run through Australia.
500
If we have earthquakes on Earth, is it possible to have earthquakes on the moon?
Yes, it is entirely possible to have earthquakes on the moon. Between 1969 and 1972 Apollo astronauts placed seismometers at their landing sites. The largest earthquake recorded by these seismometers was a 5.5 on the richter scale.
500
What if the center of the Earth were to heat up even more?
The convection currents may speed up and the tectonic plates would move faster.
