Why do we have seasons?
Seasons are due to tilt of the Earth's axis as it revolves around the Sun.
True or False: We have been able to drill all the way to the Earth's core.
False
Name the 3 fossil fuels. Are these resources renewable or nonrenewable energy resources?
Coal, oil, natural gas. Fossil fuels are nonrenewable.
What are the four Earth speres, and what does each prefix mean?
Biosphere: "Bio" means life/living
Geosphere: "Geo" means earth/land
Atmosphere: "Atmo" means air/vapor
Hydrosphere: "Hydro" means water
Name the 8 phases of the moon in order starting at New Moon.
New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third/Last Quarter, Waning Crescent
What 3 things increase as we go deeper into the Earth?
Temperature, Pressure, Density
What is environmental conservation?
The careful use of Earth's materials to prevent or reduce damage to the environment and extend the lifetime of resources. Being responsible citizens of Earth!
What are the 3 main types of rocks, and where are the typically found?
Sedimentary- bottom of lakes, caves, anywhere where sediment accumulates
Igneous- volcanoes, ocean floor
Metamorphic- deep under Earth's surface, uplift locations like mountains and volcanoes
Does the equator receive higher or lower solar intensity than the poles? Why?
Higher. The Sun is directly overhead the equator, whereas at the poles, it hits at an angle and the light spreads out over the larger surface area.
What indirect data do scientists use to create maps of the interior of the Earth?
Earthquake/seismic waves
Name at least 3 of the renewable energy resources.
wind, hydroelectric, solar, geothermal, biomass
SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE:
Summer Solstice- December
Fall Equinox- March
Winter Solstice- June
Spring Equinox- September
On the whiteboard, draw a diagram that shows the position of the Sun, Earth, and Moon during Spring Tides, and then another diagram that shows their positions during Neap Tides. Label which moon phases these occur during.
Name the 5 mechanical layers of the earth in order from top to bottom. Which is the only liquid layer?
Lithosphere, aesthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, inner core.
The only liquid layer is the outer core.
What are 3 negative impacts that come from the uneven distribution of resources around the globe?
Poverty, Malnutrition, and Pollution
What makes the inner core an exception from common scientific understandings?
The inner core is solid, regardless of being the highest temperature. Usually, as temperature increases, state of matter changes from solid to liquid to gas. However, due to intense pressure in the innermost part of Earth, this results in a solid.
Additionally, temperature and pressure are usually inversely related, but in the context of Earth's layers, they are directly related.
Explain the tidal bulge. Don't forget to mention High Tide and Low Tide.
The tidal bulge occurs from the Moon's tidal force on the Earth. Our oceans literally bulge at the areas that are in line with the Moon. Throughout the day, as the Earth rotates and different sides of the Earth are in line with the Moon at different times, High and Low Tides occur. High Tides occur within the tidal bulge, while Low Tides occur outside the tidal bulge.
On the whiteboard, draw a complete diagram of the rock cycle. Don't forget to include each of the 3 different types of rocks and ALL the processes that occur between them.

Identify and describe 3 real-world environmental issues you learned about during our gallery walk presentations.
Answers will vary.
