Rocks & Minerals
Vocabulary
100
The top most layer of the Earth is called this.
What is the crust
100
Melted liquid rock beneath Earth's surface is called this.
What is magma?
100
There are two types of weathering - name them.
What are mechanical weathering and chemical weathering?
100
Minerals can be identified by their properties. True or false
True
100
The outermost and thinnest of Earth's layers.
What is the crust?
200
The second layer of the Earth, this is the thickest layer of the Earth.
What is the mantle?
200
There are three types of tectonic plate boundaries. What are they?
What are convergent boundaries, divergent boundaries and transform boundaries?
200
The breaking of rock into smaller pieces by forces is called this.
What is mechanical weathering (or just weathering.)
200
Name three properties of minerals.
What are color, hardness, luster, streak, shape, texture?
200
The center part of the Earth, which includes the liquid part and the solid part.
What is the core?
300
The crust is broken into these.
What are tectonic plates?
300
This type of plate boundary pushes together and can create mountains.
What are convergent boundaries?
300
The movement of materials away from a place is called this.
What is erosion?
300
This type of rock forms when lava cools.
What is igneous rock?
300
The breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces by any physical force such as gravity, water, wind, ice or living organisms.
What is mechanical weathering?
400
The hottest part of the Earth, it lies in the center of the Earth.
What is the inner core?
400
This type of boundary allows magma to get to the surface of the Earth and creates volcanoes.
What are divergent boundaries? Divergent boundaries move apart.
400
When water flows into a crack in a rock, freezes, thaws, freezes, and thaws again, the rock breaks. What is the name of this process and which type of process is it?
What is ice wedging? Ice wedging is a type of mechanical weathering.
400
Fossils are often found in this type of rock.
What is sedimentary rock?
400
A large section of Earth's crust and upper mantle. These also can form mountains and cause Earthquakes.
What are tectonic plates (or plates).
500
The lithosphere is comprised of these layers.
What are the crust and the upper part of the mantle?
500
The scale which is used to measure the magnitude of an earthquake is called this.
What is the Richter scale?
500
Rain absorbs carbon dioxide from the air. This makes a material called carbonic acid. The rain then contains the carbonic acid and is called acid rain. Acid rain falls on the Earth and causes this.
What is chemical weathering?
500
What is the rock cycle?
The rock cycle is the cycle which rocks are formed and reformed. When magma cools, igneous rocks are formed. Wind water, ice and heat can weather these rocks until they are only sediments. When lots of layers of sediments are put under pressure and water, sedimentary rock forms. When these rocks are put under heat and pressure, they can change into metamorphic rocks. Igneous rock may also form metamorphic rock when put under heat and pressure.
500
The layer of Earth that sits between the crust and the core.
What is the mantle?
