What is the biosphere?

The Earth system that includes all living things. (plants, animals, humans)

100

Why is the ozone layer important?

The ozone layer protects us from harmful UV rays from the Sun. The Ozone protects us from 97% of the UV rays.

100

What are the parts of Earth's geosphere?

Crust, Upper Mantle, Lower Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core.

100

How does the geosphere & biosphere interact?

Geosphere is a habitat for animals, geosphere is home to plants (soil). We live on the geosphere.

100

The ice caps in the Antarctic and the Arctic are a part of the what

What is the Cryosphere

200

What is the Geopshere?

The Earth system that includes all non-living things (rocks, minerals, sediments ,etc.)

200

The warming of Earth is called _____

The Greenhouse Effect

200

How might the biosphere be affected if a harmful substance entered the geosphere?

The biosphere may be affected because plants live in the soil which is apart of the geosphere. Plants can die due to the harmful substance in the soil. Animals can also eat organisms that live in the soil or use the soil as their habitat.

200

How does the geosphere & hydrosphere interact?

Geosphere depends on water for soil, geosphere is eroding and weathered due to rain, lakes, oceans.

200

Most of the water on Earth can be found in what?

What is the Hydrosphere

300

What is the hydrosphere?

The system that includes all of the water on, under or above Earth

300

What is a sphere that you have an interdependent relationship with?

Geosphere- we live on the geosphere

Biosphere- friends, family, plants & animals that we eat.

Atmosphere- We breathe air in the atmosphere, protect from UV rays, protect from meteors

Hydrosphere- water we use to drink, shower, swim in.

300

Earth's main source of energy comes from what?

The Sun.

300

Explain the Greenhouse Effect

Some of the Sun's UV rays come down and hits the Earth, however some of the rays get trapped by Earth's atmosphere. The GREENHOUSE GASES prevent heat from escaping which warms the Earth to higher temperatures.

300

The _________ protects organisms that live on Earth by blocking out harmful UV rays from the sun.

What is the Atmosphere

400

What is the atmosphere?

The system that includes all of the layers of gasses that surround the Earth

400

When a volcano erupts how does the ash from the eruption interact with the hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere?

When the ash goes into the atmosphere, it can block sunlight from reaching Earth's surface. No sunlight means that plants can't make their own food - which affects the biosphere. Ash can also go into the water cycle through rain or falling into streams or rivers.

400

Interdependent means what?

To depend on one another

400

How does Earth's atmosphere protect us. What would happen if we didn't have an atmosphere?

Our atmosphere contains the air that we breathe, our atmosphere (ozone layer) protects us from the suns harmful rays, atmosphere protects us from meteors coming to Earth's surface.

400

Extends from inside Earth's crust to the lower Atmosphere.

What is the Biosphere

500

An Earth System is what?

A collection of parts that are working together. Example (Atmosphere, Biosphere, Geosphere, Hydrosphere, and Cryosphere)

500

What part of Earth's layer do we live on?

The Crust

500

Earth has 4 systems. Which system has many landforms?

Geosphere

500

Why is the Greenhouse Effect bad for Earth?

Leads to flooding, glaciers melt, evaporating of habitats (ponds, lakes, etc.) , plants/animals can die in extreme heat.

500

Extends from Earth's core to Earth's surface.

What is the Geosphere
