100

What is the definition for System?

A collection of parts that interact

100

What are the four layers of Earth?

Crust, mantle, outer core and inner core.

100

What are sedimentary rocks?

Sediments of broken down rocks, leaves, fossils anything on the ground broken up.

100

What sphere contains the water cycle?

Hydrosphere

100

How does a volcano erupting affect the atmosphere?

Smoke, ash and gasses go into the atmosphere.

200

What is the definition and give one example of the Atmosphere

The mixture of gases that surround the planet.  ie-oxygen

200

Dirt is part of the geosphere.  What is dirt made of?

Soil, which is broken down rock, living things and non-living things.

200

What are igneous rocks?

Volcanic rocks that are quickly cooled

200

What is the largest area of water?

Oceans

200

Carbon dioxide levels increase in the atmosphere when a volcano erupts.  True or False

True

300

What is the definition and give 2 examples of the Biosphere

All living things on earth.

Plants, trees, flowers, animals, humans....

300

What two spheres are in the water cycle?

Hydrosphere and atmosphere

300

How are metamorphic rocks made?

Rocks are pressed down towards the core and are melted by pressure and heat.

300

What are the parts of the water cycle?

evaporation, condensation and precipitation

300

How does lava help the land around a volcano?

The soil becomes richer in nutrients from the hardened lava.

400

What is the definition of Geosphere and name three examples

The solid portion of Earth.

Ground, rocks, soil, minerals.... all nonliving things

400

How does the atmosphere and biosphere interact?

Plants give off carbon dioxide which is in the air.

400

What causes rocks to break down?

Weathering and erosion

400

What is the second largest area of water?

glaciers

400

What is formed in the geosphere as a result of a volcanic eruption?

Fossil fuels

500

What is the definition and give 4 examples of the Hydrosphere?

All of Earth's water, taken together in all states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) such as:  Oceans, glaciers, lakes, rivers, streams, ponds...

500

How does the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere all interact with one another?

The atmosphere has oxygen in it to let living things, (biosphere) live. Plants need to grow in the soil (geosphere) to live. The air (atmosphere) carries wind that can blow rain to rivers, lakes, oceans ect.(hydrosphere) which waters the plants and animals.

500

How does the individual parts come together to make the rock cycle? Three steps

* Rocks break down by weathering and are pressed together with heat and pressure.

* The sediment becomes metamorphic.

* When they melt, then they cool and harden to become igneous.

500

What units of measurement are used to measure large areas of water and land?

Kilometers and kiloliters

500

How does an erupting volcano near an ocean affect weather patterns?

It is more likely to rain more on the side of the volcano near the ocean.
