What causes a breeze?
Differences in air pressure.
A breeze occurs because of differences in air pressure between two areas. As air warms, it rises up. This causes less air pressure in that area. If there is cooler air surrounding that space, the area with cooler air will have more air pressure, and the cooler air will move into the warmer space to replace the rising air. When this occurs, wind breezes happen as a result of the cool air moving into the space with less air pressure. As such, a breeze will generally move in the direction where there is less air pressure.

How are breezes measured?
Using a scale called the Beaufort scale
The Beaufort scale has been used historically to classify nautical winds into one of several different categories based on how many knots, or nautical miles (about 1.15 miles on land), the wind travels per hour. According to this scale, wind breezes include winds that travel between about six and 49 knots per hour. At the lower end of this range, a light breeze moves at a speed of about six to 11 knots per hour, while a strong breeze is one that travels at about 39 to 49 knots per hour.
