True or False-

Plants use the energy from the sun to run their life processes.

False!  Light energy cannnot do the work of the cells! It is not the correct form of energy.

100

What does photosynthesis translate to?

Photo- light

synthesis- to put toegther/to make

So together it means using light to make (food)

100

What is the purpose of cellular respiration?

To take glucose and create usable celluar energy (ATP).

100

Define trophic level?

A trophic level is an organism's position in a food chain, representing its "feeding" level or energy source. Examples of  levels include producers, to primary consumers (herbivores) eating them, then secondary (carnivores eating herbivores) and tertiary consumers (carnivores eating other carnivores), with apex predators at the top.

100

What organelle does photosynthesis occur in?

Chloroplasts ( filled with the light absorbing pigment, chlorophyll)

200

What type of energy ( be specific) is used in photosynthesis?

Light energy  ( the sun emits two types of energy: heat and light, only light energy is used in photosyn)

200

What is the main part/organ of the plant in which photosynthesis occurs.

The leaves are the primary place photosynthesis occurs. This is mostly because they have a large surface area for sun to hit and they contain many chloroplasts.  Can happen in other green parts likie steam too, but most is completed in the leaves.

200

Where does most of cellular respiration occur?

 mitochondria

200

How do food chains and food webs show energy transfer?

ARROWS, NOT LINES!

The arrows shows the direction the energy is flowing so it moves from what is being eaten to what is eating it.   Sun----->Carrot--------> Rabbit------> Fox

200

What are the products of photosynthesis?

Glucose and Oxygen

300

What is the difference between energy transfer and energy transformation. Explain each in connection to an ecosystem.

Energy transfer is just moving energy from one place to another. In an ecosystem, this means moving it from the sun, to producers and then to consumers.

Energy transformation means changing the energy from one form to another. The light energy from the sun is used to change/convert into chemical energy, glucose.

300

What is the function of the stomata? Must have a complete answer for the points.

The allow for gas exchange.

When they are open the allow carbon dioxide in and oxygen and excess water vapor out.

When they are close they prevent too much water from escaping the leaves.

300

What body systems are most closely connected to the chemical equation of cellular respiration? Explain your answer.

Digestie system because it breaks down food and eventually gets glucose. Glucose is one material of cellular respiration.

Respiratory system because it is the system that gets oxygen into the body. Oxygen is one material needed for cellular respiration.

300

Why are decomposers needed ecosystems?

Decomposers are needed in ecosystems because they help break down dead organisms and return the molecules to the soil. This is needed because producers would not be able to grow without nutrient rich soil.

300

What are two things you can tell me about these chemical equation.

CH₄ + 2O₂---->CO₂(g) + 2H₂O

There are multiple correct answers

1) Materials are to the left of the arrow.  2) Products are on the right of the arrow. 3) The number of atoms in materials and products are the same. 4) The are two molecules of oxygen in the materials. 5) There are two molecules of water in the products. 6) This equations includes the elements: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

400

What does the Law of Conservation of Energy state?

Energy cannot be created nor destroyed

400

Why is sunlight needed for photosynthesis to occur?

The energy is needed to break the bonds in the molecules of the materials so that they can be into reformed into the products.

400

What are two reasons why humans need plants in order to obtain celluar energy?

Plants give use foods that eventually our body digests to obtain the glucose needed for cellular respiration.

Plants also release the oxygen we need for cellular respiration.  We could not produce ATP with them for two reasons!

Copy and paste the link into your browser.  Examine it and explain the trophic level of the wolf. Explain clearly as taught in class.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1g2TDElTNRI8LDsljMHxomrwuIFNdpcT1kNIzqdF1dps/edit?usp=sharing

The wolf both and 3rd and 4th level consumer.

For example, in one chain it is a tertiary consumer because it eats the rat, the second-level consumer that eats the grasshopper, the primary consumer that eats the corn, the producer. * To be clear trace back to the producer identifying the names and the levels.

* Make sure you can see how it is a 4th level consuemr too!

How much energy would the available for the primary and secondary consumers?

First level consumer would have 25,000 kcal of energy available and secondary consumers would have 2,500 kcal of energy available.

500

Explain why there must differnet types of energy?

Because not all energy can do all work.

500

Can you correctly write the equation down for photosynthesis on scrap paper?

DO IT! Has to be perfect for points!

                   Light energy/sunlight

6CO+ 6H2O ---------------------->  C6H12O+ 6O2

500

Why can't a plant just perform photosynthesis? (answer is multiple sentences)

Photosynthesis just makes the plant's food which is the sugar called glucose. Glucose is chemical energy, but not the correct form of chemical energy that can power the cells. Cellular respiration turns it into the correct form of cellular energy, ATP.

500

What does an energy pyramid show? Why is it that shape and what rule does it also demonstrate?

Energy pyramids show that as you move up trophic levels from producers to consumers the amount of energy that can be passed on to the level above is only about 10% ( 10% rule). This is the shape of a pyramid to show that the number of organisms that level can support decreases as you move up towards the top because there is not enough energy to support many. So there ecosystems can support many more 1st level consumers compared to tertiary consumers.

500

Using the words materials and products explain the connection between photosynthesis and cellular respiration?

The products of photosynthesis- C6H12O6 + 6O2

are the same as the materials of cellular respiration-C6H12O6 + 6O2

This makes sense because the point of photosyn is to make the food (glucose)so it is a product. The point of cellular respiration is to take the glucose and break it down so it is a material.
