These are used to connect the patient to the ECMO module.
What are cannulas?
Venous draining with arterial return. Bypasses the heart.
What is VA ECMO?
This is an event that can happen distal to the cannula site.
What is an ischemic limb injury?
These contain most of the supplies required to assist.
What are ECMO and procedure cart?
Patient's temperature is rapidly dropping.
What is check the heater/cooler temperature?
This is where oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide removal, and blood temperature modulation occurs.
What is the Oxygenator (AKA Membrane Lung)?
Drains and returns in the venous system. Does NOT bypass the heart.
This is represented by an increase in the negative pressure number on the venous cannula.
What is chatter?
This includes, interventionalist, APP, nurse, perfusionist, etc.
Who are the people involved in an ECMO cannulation?
Patient is becoming rapidly hypoxic.
what is check the O2 connection?
This supplies fresh air and oxygen to the Membrane Lung.
What is the Blender?
This is used when heart and lungs are unable to function properly.
What is VAV ECMO?
This can visualized on an ECMO component and represented by a rising delta P.
What is clot formation on the oxygenator?
This contains sterile surgical tools. Must be switched through sterile processing between every use.
What is the red bin?
ECMO alarming "No ECMO flow".
What is checking the cannulas for kinks?
This is where delta P, rpm, flow, and pressures can be observed.
What is the control screen?
If the "mixing cloud" is not in the correct area, this can cause inadequate upper body perfusion and hyper-perfusion of the lower body.
What is North-South Syndrome?
Supracore, Vascular dilatator kit, sheeths, etc are examples of this.
What are devices to assist in cannula access?
The ECMO circuit stops due to "bubble in line" alarm.
what is check the flow meter/bubble detector?
Contains an impeller with cones or curved blades in fixed housing. Generates flow by creating suction at the central hub and driving fluid outward by the force it is named after.
This is performed when the patient is being actively resuscitated.
eCPR (AKA ECMO CPR)
This disrupts the flow of blood and is likely a fatal event.
What is cannula dislodgement?
Site assessment, identify cannula clamping point, foresight numbers, intra-cannula blood color, etc.
What are safety assessments?
A previously alert patient becomes rapidly confused and is showing signs and symptoms of hypoxia.
When a pre and post oxygenator gas should be checked?
