This course introduces students to a number of fascinating subjects regarding their chosen profession. Such topics as education philosophy, the school of reform movement, and teacher rights and responsibilities are reviewed through a format that emphasizes student interaction and group process. A 30-hour tutoring component is required with this course.

Teaching requires courage, commitment, energy, and serious desire to serve others. Current standards require demonstrated excellence to earn a teachers license. Class activities, readings and discussions are designed not only to familiarize you with the past and present issues that have affected American education, but to consider the future of our profession and what you will see in potential 30 year career. We want to help you reflect on if a lifetime in what is a very demanding, exciting and life changing profession is the path for you.

You will use your mobile learning devices when needed for activities and discussions in class. If there are extenuating circumstances which may result in a delay of completing course assignments, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor before the due date to discuss options. Your commitment to becoming a professional educator begins with being present and on time for all class sessions. Your contributions in class are the elements necessary to bring life to a class’ time together. Since it is difficult to complete activities and establish a sense of community when members are absent, punctuality and attendance in all classes is mandatory. In the event of a school sponsored activity, you must turn in the required assignment before the activity. In emergency situations that necessitate an absence, candidates must notify instructor in person or via the e-mail address listed on the syllabus prior to the absence if possible. If an unexcused absence extends more than the equivalent of two class sessions, your grade will be reduced by one letter grade. Please note that tardiness or absenteeism may affect your grade and candidates who miss more than 25% of the total class time must retake the course. Typically this equates to three missed class sessions. If you have questions about this policy, please consult your instructor. Excused absences are limited to University sponsored activities (such as sports and choir) or medical situations. In either case, requests for excused absences must be accompanied by a note from designated Concordia University personnel (coach, choir director, etc.) or a doctor. It is assumed that students will be active participants and will receive 10 points per session for participation. Students will not be given points for participation on days they are absent. Points may also be deducted for tardiness or leaving class early.

All work and activities submitted should be genuine signs of individual achievement from which the student should derive personal satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment.
