This "A" is commonly mistaken for depression.
What is apathy.
Luigi is watching a James Bond movie when he starts to call for help. He thinks James Bond is actually in his room, shooting at spies.
What is altered perception. Altered perception because of changes in Luigi's depth perception. His brain cannot distinguish between what is in the TV and what is in the room.
Sana looks in the mirror and sees a stranger.
What is amnesia. What is agnosia. Amnesia because Sana forgets she is a mature woman and Agnosia because Sana does not recognize that she is looking at a mirror. She has mistaken the mirror for a window or wall.
Joti had a stroke last year. It paralyzed her upper body. She uses a wheelchair full time and is a 2 person assist. Joti tells the kitchen staff that she is going to bake a cake for the next birthday party. They offer to help, and she tells them she doesn't need any help.
What is anosognosia. Joti's brain does not recognize her abilities and needs. She is not aware of the change in her abilities.
Tamara listens to the sounds coming in the window. She is delighted to hear ocean waves. Tamara lives in a care home next to Vancouver General Hospital. Her room overlooks a busy street.
What is Agnosia. Tamara's brain is mixing up people, objects and sounds therefore, she is misinterpreting the sound of traffic.
Mr. Aziz walks around the dining room "what do I do?". He repeats himself over and over again. The staff are concerned he will not sit down to eat his meals today.
What is attention deficit? Mr. Aziz is having trouble focusing and is easily distracted. NOTE: attention deficit can be a sign of delirium!
Louisa attends fitness every morning. The instructor cues with "everyone lift up their right arm and reach for the sky!". Louise lifts up her feet and holds them off the ground.
What is apraxia. Louisa is having difficulty following instructions because her sense of space, sequencing and movement are changing due to brain damage.
Every afternoon Carlos takes off his slippers, puts on his outdoor shoes, ties up the laces and starts looking for his briefcase. This was Carlos' daily routine for over 30 years - he left work at 3:00 PM every week day. What part of Carlos' memory seems to be working well?
His long-term memory and his habitual memory.
Robert puts on his shoes and then feels frustrated when he cannot pull his socks on next. His brain is having difficulty with sequencing and order.
What is apraxia.
Chico loves to dance but for some reason, when you invite him to join you at the salsa performance, he says "sure" and then sits there - no movement, no smile, no action.
What is apathy. You know that Chico loves dance, but he isn't showing any motivation. There is little or no emotional response and it seems like he does not care.
