Why is the present progressive tense used?
To talk about events that are happening currently; at this very moment
estoy
Conjugate: Yo (escuchar)
estoy escuchando
Yo estás hablando.
The subject and verb do not match!
It should either be Yo estoy or Tú estás.
Luis está escuchando en la clase de biología.
Luis is listening in biology class.
How do we form the present progressive tense?
It is formed using a conjugation of estar AND a present participle.

Conjugate: Tú (comer)
estás comiendo
Ella está practiciendo.
Practicando* (practicar is an -AR verb, so the ending should be -ando)
Tú estás comiendo una ensalada.
You are eating a salad.
How do you form a present participle? (There are 2 steps)
Remove the -ar, -er, or -ir ending, and then add either -ando or -iendo

Conjugate: Los chicos (dormir (o-u)*)
están durmiendo
Ustedes están leyendo los poemas en la clase de inglés.
You all are reading poems in English class.
How do you know when to add -ando and when to add -iendo?
For AR verbs, add -ando.
For ER/IR verbs, add -iendo.

están instead of son (We MUST use a form of estar in front of the participle, not ser!)
Los gemelos están viendo una película.
List at least 2 irregular participles in Spanish.
Oír, Traer, Leer, Dormir, Pedir, Servir, etc. are all irregular in some way.

Conjugate: Nosotros (pedir (e-i)*)
