Forms of Fiction
Short story - brief, few characters, 1 theme
Novels- longer, more characters, complicated plot, more than 1 theme
Novella -longer than a short story, shorter than a novel (50-100 pages)
Third-person point of view -
The narrator does NOT participate in the action of the story.
The narrator can tell things that the characters do not know.
They are omniscient, they know the thoughts, feelings, and actions of all the characters.
Tone
The tone of a literary work is the writer’s attitude toward his or her audience and subject
Nonfiction
writing that provides facts about real people, events, and ideas
forms of NONFICTION:
Functional texts: provide information and give directions that help readers accomplish various tasks
Literary nonfiction: describes true events and real people, but uses elements of literature
Cause & Effect
Cause: The reason why something happens.
Effect: What happens as a result of the cause.
Headline -
text that provides overview of content
Mood
Mood - is the feeling created within a written work, it is what it feels like to be in the world that the writer has created.
Myths
tell how the universe or a culture began
explain something in nature, such as the return of spring after winter
teach a lesson
express a value, such as courage or honor
Narrator -
the voice that tells a true (nonfiction) or imagined (fiction) story
Fact & Opinion
A fact is something that is true or really happened. It can be proven or verified.
An opinion is your feelings, beliefs, or personal judgement about a particular topic.
Byline -
line that shows who wrote the article
Symbolism
A symbol is anything that stands for something else.

A verb expresses action or being.
Point of View -
The perspective from which the story is told (we are seeing things through their eyes)
Protagonist -
Protagonist - is the main character in a literary work. Often, the protagonist is a person, but sometimes can be an animal
Caption -
information about pictures or other visuals
Nouns
Noun - names a person, place, thing, or idea
Nouns can be singular, plural, common or proper, and possessive.
linking verb
A linking verb connects, or links the subject of the sentence to a word or words in the predicate.
First-person point of view -
the narrator participates in the action of the story (they will use pronouns: I, we, us)
Antagonist
Antagonist - is a character or a force, in conflict with a main character, or protagonist
Pronoun -
Pronoun - takes the place of a noun.
The noun that is replaced by a pronoun is called the antecedent.
Compound noun
Compound noun - one noun made by joining two or more words.
