Like the fire ants, the nutrias found that Florida suited them. They had few enemies in Florida's forests and swamps. The climate was right for them, too. And nutrias found plenty of grass and other vegetation to eat, especially in marshy areas. They eat so many marshy plants, though, that they have been known to destroy marshes completely. That spells trouble for the environment. When a swampy area loses its plants, it becomes a shallow lake. Animals that need plants to eat or need to use their roots and leaves for protection may no longer be able to live in the lake. They are forced to find new homes-or they die out.
