What are the two ways to vote absentee?

1. By mail: a request form is sent to Auditor's Office containing all necessary information (70 days before the election), on the allowed date (20 days before the election), a ballot will be mailed to you, mail back the voted ballot by the end of Election Day.

2. In person at the Auditor's Office: very similar experience to voting on Election Day at a precinct.

Take your ballot back to one of the PEOs.  They will mark it as 'spoiled' and reissue you a new one.

Early Voting is when you cast your ballot and have it tabulated before election day.  Currently illegal in Iowa!

What are some "Do's" and "Don'ts" of Election Day?

Do's: Look up your polling location ahead of time, view sample ballot ahead of time, have ID ready, be nice to PEOs.

What is a Poll Watcher?

Officially appointed observer for a political party, candidate or organization who monitors the voting process to ensure elections are conducted fairly and transparently.  

***Must make a request to the Auditor's Office ahead of election to do this.***

Can:

  • Observe the election process without interfering.
  • Write down the names of people who have or have not yet voted, using a voter roster.
  • Challenge a voter's qualifications, provided the poll watcher is a registered voter in the county.
  • Report perceived problems to the county auditor.

Can't:

  • Interfering with the election process in any way.
  • Handling ballots or voting equipment.
  • Engaging in arguments with precinct election officials (PEOs), voters, or other poll watchers.
  • Soliciting votes, offering advice or literature, or wearing political buttons, stickers, or clothing inside the polling place.
  • Comparing a voter's signature or inspecting documents voters provide for identification.
