What kind of charge do neutrons have?
Neutral
Define electricity.
The movement of electrons to create energy.
Is it safe to put a fork into a toaster while it's plugged in?
No!
Name an object in this room that uses electricity.
Choices vary: TV, computers, lights...
What kind of charge do protons have?
Positive
Define insulator.
Any object or material that does not allow electricity to flow through it.
i.e. plastic coat hanger
Is an electric eel an example of natural or man made electricity?
Natural
One object has more electrons than another, and when they touch the electrons jump over to the other object causing a small shock.
Electricity is caused by the movement of what?
Electrons
Define closed circuit.
a circuit without interruption, a complete path for electrons to flow.
On a whiteboard, draw the safety symbol meaning electrical hazard/danger.
See whiteboard.
Was Mrs. Berg's wedding ring an insulator or a conductor?
Conductor
Negative
Define conductor.
Any object or material that allows electricity to flow through it.
i.e. A metal nail
A light bulb is sitting on top of a battery with no cords touching the light bulb, will it light? Why/Why not?
No. It wont light until there is a complete circuit (both ends of the battery are connected to the light bulb).
Why do conductors allow electricity to flow?
Because conductors have loosely bound electrons, allow the energy to move through the gaps easily.
What is the centre of the atom called?
The Nucleus.
What is it called when there is no load OR electrons are blocked from the load?
Short Circuit
Describe what happened when the steel wool caught on fire during our class experiment.
When the battery was connected to the steel wool, electrons started to move in a circuit. However, there was no load to use that energy, causing heat which led to the steel wool catching fire. It was a short circuit.
What is the law of electrostatics?
Like charges repel
Opposite charges attract
