In the diagram, there is an open circuit. Would attaching wire 1 and wire 3 to a paper clip make the lightbulb turn on? Why or why not?
Yes because a paper clip is a conductor.
What is an insulator most like? Why?
bridge
lock
stream
highway
An insulator is most like a lock because they stop the flow of electricity.
Is this circuit open or closed?
Open because the switch is up (not connected to the circuit so electricity can not flow.
Electromagnets can be used to pick up magnetic objects in one location and drop them off in another location. Why?
In the diagram, there is an open circuit. Would attaching wire 1 and wire 3 to a rubber band make the lightbulb turn on? Why or why not?
a rubber band would not make the light bulb turn on because a rubber band is an insulator
Which is a conductor most like:
a stop sign
a bridge
a road block
a cliff
conductors are most like a bridge because they allow electricity to flow through them, just like a bridge allows traffic to flow through them.
Is this circuit open or closed?
Closed because the switch is down and there is no break in the circuit.
Is this a temporary magnet or a permanent magnet:
- can turn on and off
- attracts iron and steel objects
-the strength can be changed
Temporary magnet because it can turn on and off and the strength can be changed
This part of a circuit uses the electricity.
What is a load?
Which does not belong?
rubber band
strip of cloth
coil of copper wire
wooden toothpick
coil of copper wire because it is a conductor
What type of circuit is this?
Series Circuit
Is this a temporary or permanent magnet:
-Strength can not be changed
- can pick up 50 paper clips
- attracts iron and steel objects
Permanent magnet because it's strength cannot be changed
This part of a circuit easily opens and closes the circuit.
What is a switch?
Why are humans good conductors?
We are made mostly of water!
What type of circuit is this?
Parallel Circuit
Is an electromagnet permanent or temporary?
Temporary
List three materials that are needed to build a circuit.
Give the scientific term and an example of each.
A power source: battery
A path: wire
A load: light bulb
Is wood a conductor or insulator?
Insulator
Describe what happened in the above diagram. Name one experiment in class that demonstrated this phenomenon.
Static Electricity:
Before, the balloon and cloth are balanced with the same number of protons and electrons.
After rubbing, the cloth picks up more electrons from the balloon.
This means the balloon is negatively charged and will stick to a material that has a surplus of protons (or positive charges)
We constructed electromagnets in class. What would you need to change if you wanted to be able to pick up more paperclips?
In order to pick up more paper clips, we would need more wire and create a longer coil around the nail. We could also use a stronger battery with the longer coil. This would strengthen the electromagnet to pick up more paper clips.
