What is force
a push or a pull
What are the ends of magnets called?
Poles
What happens when an electric current is flowing through a wire?
A magnetic field is created
Sources of energy are classified as ____________ or ______________.
renewable, nonrenewable
Name 2 things in Mrs. Ms Halls desk drawer
Pens, Post-its, lotion, chap-stick, notepad.
Team A and B are playing tug of war. Team A is pulling with 1650 N of force. Team B is winning. How much force is Team B using?
>1650 N
__________ poles attract.
How can you increase the strength of an electromagnet?
Thicker wire, more wraps, more/stronger batteries
_____ energy enters a motor and is transferred to ______ energy
electrical, kinetic
What sport does Mrs. Hall enjoy watching?
Baseball/Softball
A soccer ball is sitting still in the yard. What forces are acting on it?
Gravity pulling down, earth pushing up
Iron filings can be used to show this
magnetic field
Why should you only change one variable at a time when conducting scientific research?
Energy cannot be _______ or _________
created, destroyed
What is Ms. Halls Birthday
06/10
How do you stop an object that is moving?
Apply a force in the opposite direction of the motion.
What is the difference between a permanent magnet and a temporary magnet?
Permanent magnets are always a magnet. Temporary magnets are only magnetic when they are in a magnetic field. Induced into magnetism
0 credit if you said temporary magnets aren't always a magnet and don't explain how or why that is.
What is inside a battery?
chemicals/potential energy
How does an electric motor work?
Electric current runs through wire coils which induces magnetism. Those temporary magnets push or pull against the permanent magnets. This causes the shaft to move. That makes the commutator connect with different coils so a new push or pull occurs making the shaft continue to rotate. This occurs repeatedly hundreds of times a second.
What is Ms. Halls Fav Color
Pink or Blue
Steve is pushing a cart against a wall with 700 N of force. Why isn't the cart moving?
The wall is pushing back with 700 N of force. Net force is zero so there is no change in movement.
What is potential energy?
It is the energy an object has based on where it is located.
Energy that could be released, like a battery or if an object could move but isn't yet.
How does an electromagnet work? / Why can you turn it off?
The electricity running through the wire coil has a magnetic force. The iron core is induced into magnetism because it is in the magnetic field. When the current stops flowing, the magnetic field disappears so the core is no longer magnetic.
How does a generator produce electricity?
The wire coils are turned through magnetic fields hundreds of times a second (kinetic energy). This induces electric current in the coils which is then passed out of the generator through wires. (electric energy)
