How can you use atomic emission spectra to determine if an element is part of an unknown compound?
When light is passed through a glass prism, the atomic emission spectrum is produced. Each element has it's own set of frequencies emitted by the atoms of the element. No two elements have the same frequencies emitted. By comparing the unknown frequencies to that of known elements, you could determine the elements in a compound.
