Events leading up to the climax
What is rising action?
When the opposite of what you expect to happen happens (e.g. the firehall burns down or the heart surgeon has a heart attack)
What is situational irony?
When the author tells us something about a character (e.g. Ms. Desautels has blonde hair)
What is direct characterization?
I was excited to see my best friend Maria.
What is first person point of view?
What is person vs. nature?
When conflicts are resolved (for the most part).
What is resolution?
When the character says the opposite of what they mean.
What is verbal irony?
When the author infers something about a character. E.g. "Ms. Desautels was headed to her Wednesday spin class"- the reader assumes Ms. Desautels is an active person.
What is indirect characterization?
Ms. Desautels was excited to see her best friend Maria.
What is third person point of view?
A person is the antagonist.
What is person vs. person?
We meet the characters, establish the setting, the conflict is introduced.
What is exposition?
When the reader knows something that the characters in the story do not.
What is dramatic irony?
This character stays the same in the story
When the narrator gives the thoughts and feelings of one of the characters, but uses he/ she instead of I/me
What is third person limited omniscient?
A person is trying to overthrow the government.
What is person vs. society?
Considered part of the climax. This is when the character has to make a choice that leads to the main action of the story.
What is the turning point?
When two things contrast each other.
What is juxtaposition?
This character changes in the story.
What is a dynamic character?
When the narrator can give us the point of view of any character.
What is third person omniscient?
A person is considering giving up on their dream.
What is person vs. self?
Background information/ past events necessary for the story but not part of the narrative.
What is antecedent action?
A recurrent symbol or image in a text.
This character juxtaposes another character.
What is a foil character?
When the narrator addresses the reader, as if the reader is a part of the story.
What is second person point of view?
Is the person or force pitted against the main character.
