Emergency action plan essentials
100

During a soccer match, you turn to talk to someone and when you look back over one of your players is injured, grabbing his ankle. The day is quite hot so it's possible that it is a cramp. The player that is injured is the star player and if they are taken out of the game, there's a large possibility that the team will lose. Your job is to locate the source of the pain and determine whether they are too injured to continue playing or whether they can re-enter the game.

What questions do you ask to determine whether they can re-enter the game or not? Provide three questions/ tests that would give you enough information to determine whether they could come back to the game or not.

Try and see whether they can put weight on it

Check their range of motion

Ask when they last had water

Is there significant bruising or swelling around the affected area?

On a very, very hot day during the middle of a play your star running back, grabs his hamstring in pain, and seems unable to continue running. He immediately takes a knee so that he isn't tackled and then you are allowed on the field

Make a short diagnosis, explain it, and provide a basic emergency action plan for the event

Most likely just a cramp

First, as usual, check ABCs, although may not be necessary because the athlete is obviously awake

Next assessed the severity of the cramp

After that, take them off the field and have them sit down

After that, give them fluids and massage the muscles lightly to alleviate the cramp.

In the event of an emergency, athletic trainers and referees, will use a variety of _____ to communicate with emergency personnel and other athletic trainers about what they need without having to yell or use radios.

Signals

1. Arm extended overhead with clenched fist sign: summon physician to the field

2. Clenched fist, pointer finger spinning sign: alert EMS on site or designated individual to call

3. Fist striking chest sign: Cardiac/respiratory arrest; bring AED, oxygen, stretcher; ATs removed uniform

4. Arms held horizontally sign: EMS brings spinal motion restriction board for possible cervical/spine injury; EMT, ATs, medical staff prepare for multi-person lift or roll

5. Supinated hands in front of body or waist level sign: stretcher needed

6. Hand to lower leg or thigh: splint needed

7. Pointing at head: possible concussion

While defending a goal, the goalie hits their head on the goal post. They are knocked out cold for a second and when they wake back up, they seem to be very confused. After waking up for a second, they vomit on the field just before you get to them.

Make a short diagnosis, explain it, and provide a basic emergency action plan for the event

Most likely a concussion due to the nature of the injury

The first thing you always want to check is ABC's

next, You may want to ask some basic questions to see whether their brain is still functioning properly

After that, you should take them off of the field and into a dark and quieter area.

After this, you should do some basic concussion tests this could include asking them to remember a random string of words. And seeing whether they have trouble balancing.

On one of the hottest days in Arizona, your football team is playing. Before the first play could even start your center collapses, and seems to be unresponsive. The play is stopped, and you are allowed onto the field.

Make a short diagnosis, explain it, and provide a basic emergency action plan for the event

Most likely heat stroke because with all of the gear they are wearing, and the fact that you are in Arizona on one of the hottest days it would be incredibly hard to avoid.

First thing you should do is check CAB's

Next, while on the field, you should try and remove at least some of the unnecessary equipment they are wearing.

While doing that, you should tell someone to contact emergency services

Next, you should try and get them off the field and out of the heat as quickly as possible

Next, you should take the temperature

Then you should remove all remaining equipment

After that, you should call them down by either having them soak in cold water or placing cold, wet towels on as many parts of the body as you can.

Once emergency services arrive, you should hand them off to the emergency personnel and contact the persons emergency contact

A player on your soccer team is jumping for a header, and their leg bends at an odd angle when they land, and the knee makes a popping sound. Immediately, the area turns purple and starts swelling and the athlete cries out in pain

Make a short diagnosis, explain it, and provide a basic emergency action plan for the event

The injury is an ACL tear.

This can be assumed based on the fact that the knee bent at an odd angle, which often leads to some sort of tear, the knee made a popping sound, which is a warning signal for some sort of tear, especially with ACL tears and the area turned purple and started swelling which is never a good sign.

The first thing you always want to check is ABC's

After that, ask the athlete where it hurts

Next escort the athlete off the field being sure to not put any pressure on the injured leg

Finally implement rice to prevent any further injury and contact emergency contact and emergency services

During a play, your QB gets sacked, but when he falls down, his foot gets overextended, and he starts grabbing his achilles tendon while screaming in pain. The game is stopped, and you are allowed on the field.

Make a short diagnosis, explain it, and provide a basic emergency action plan for the event

Most likely an Achilles tear

First check ABCs

Then ask where it hurts

After that splint their foot in an equinus position

While doing this, tell someone to call emergency services

Next get the player off of the field

After getting the player off of the field implement rice

Finally wait for emergency services to arrive while reassuring the player

In sports medicine what are the ABCs? Determine what each letter stands for and if  they are used for a responsive or unresponsive person?

ABC's stands for airway, breathing and circulation and they are used on responsive people

After slide, tackling another player and having their foot stepped on one of the players on your team starts screaming in pain, and grabbing their foot.

The refs stop play, and allow you onto the field.

Make a short diagnosis, explain it, and provide a basic emergency action plan for the event

Due to the nature of the injury, it is most likely a broken foot

In this event, under no circumstance, should you remove the cleat while on the field of play

The first thing you always want to check is ABC's

Next, you should ask the player where it hurts, ?

After locating the injured area you should then splint and immobilize the foot

While doing this, you should tell someone to call emergency services

Next, you should take the player off of the field of play in a stretcher to make sure they are properly immobilized

Once they are off the field, you should implement rice and wait for emergency services

During a play, a wide receiver gets tackled from four different sides. This puts their leg in a terrible position, and the player screams in pain. After the players get off of them you notice that their tibia is sticking out the side of their leg.

Play is immediately stopped, and you are allowed on the field. As you are coming towards them, they faint from the pain.

Make a short diagnosis, explain it, and provide a basic emergency action plan for the event

The injury is obviously a compound fracture

First check, CAB's and tell someone to call 911

Next control bleeding with a clean cloth and apply pressure around into the sides of the wound, but do not apply direct pressure to the fractured bone.

Next splint the leg and take the player off of the field in a stretcher.

Next cover the wound in sterile gauze to prevent infection.

Finally implement the remaining rice steps reassure the patient and wait for emergency services.

In sports medicine what are the CAB's? Determine what each letter stands for and if they are used for a responsive or unresponsive person?

CAB's stand for circulation, airway and breathing. These are used on unresponsive people

During a high stakes scenario, the goalie stops an incredibly powerful shot with their chest. For a second they seem fine, but then they collapse to the ground.

The refs stop play, and allow you onto the field.

Make a short diagnosis, explain it, and provide a basic emergency action plan for the event

The condition is called commotio cordis

The first thing you should do is go to the field and see whether the athlete is conscious

 check CAB's

After determining that their heart is not beating they are not conscious, and they are not breathing, you should then immediately begin chest compressions, and tell someone to get an AED

While, continuing to do CPR you should tell someone to call emergency services

Finally, after you defibrillate them, you should take them off of the field and wait for emergency services

500

During a play, a wide receiver makes contact with the safety. This puts their neck at a very odd angle, and once they fall down, they do not get back up. Play is stopped and you're allowed on the field

Make a short diagnosis, explain it, and provide a basic emergency action plan for the event

Definitely some sort of spinal cord injury

First rush to the player. Tell someone to call 911 and put someone on crowd control.

Once you reach the player immediately check CAB's

Next immobilize the spine and apply a cervical collar

With the help of a group, put the player on a backboard

Next begin CPR while being careful of not moving the neck

After that, take them off the field and wait for emergency services

Resume CPR once they are taken off of the field

500

What is the most important part of effectively implementing an emergency action plan?

Everyone must remember the plan. Without remembering the plan or signals, there is a high likelihood of error and further injury due to miscommunication.
