Describe several actions to take when relocating or evacuating Residents.
What are A. All personnel (housekeeping, dietary, nursing) on duty should report to the central core area to receive instructions. Begin evacuation of residents only when instructed to do so. Before leaving your place of duty to assist in the evacuation, turn off lights, exhaust fans, close windows and doors. B. The evacuation starts at the point nearest the fire. Wrap each resident in a bedspread or blanket from their bed. Do not hunt for a coat or purse. Take the resident through at least one set of fire doors away from the fire or to the nearest outside exit. CLOSE RESIDENT ROOM DOORS BEHIND YOU and evacuate residents in the most convenient manner: wheelchair, ambulatory, dragged on a blanket. Close doors to any remaining empty rooms. Quickly, but gently place bedfast residents on a blanket on the floor and drag head first from the room. If unable to move a resident, place a wet towel over his face and tell him help is coming; do not forget to get help. Evacuate residents to the outside only as a last resort. (Note: Special Care Unit residents will not be evacuated if the fire – or fire drill – is not located in the Special Care Unit.) C. It is essential that one nurse or other staff member stay with the incompetent residents until the crisis is over or other help arrives, such as a family member
