Long distance numbers may work when local numbers do not. This is a good way for family members to "check in".

What is the role of the charge nurse in an emergency?
Determine status of staff, patients and unit. Determine bed and staff availability. Fill out department status form for command center. Coordinate staffing needs. Determine flow of patients.

Use paper charting located in education closet, (trifold nurse charting).

RN: report to unit, ensure patient safety, conserve energy, assist with patient flow, inform families HUC: Call staff as directed by CN, fill out staff availability form, compile medical records to transport with patients. CCT: Assist to call staff, gather disaster binder and box, serve as runner, assist with patient flow
