When the fire alarm is activated, what 6 steps do you take?



  • Evacuate the building using the nearest exit. The closest exit is likely not the one you use everyday.

  • Instruct residents to move to your respective Emergency Assembly Area (EAA).

  • Inform the GA On Duty. (if you are cognizant handle the matter, if not call the on call GA).

  • Take a count of residents.

  • Connect with PD to determine reason and location of alarm.

  • Once given the all clear to return, complete the Fire Alarm Log.

Using a Body Fluid Kit, the student staff will clean it up and disinfect the area.


If there is a large amount of bodily fluid(s), consult  an Assistant Director to determine if maintenance should be called.

Describe an emergency maintenance situation and who you’d call and describe a non-emergency maintenance situation and what you’d submit.



Emergency maintenance issues: consult an Assistant Director and contact the appropriate duty number for physical plant.


Non-emergency issues: submit a work order using StarRez or the staff toolbox and place a sign in the area, if appropriate.

During a tornado watch, what are three things you should do?



When a tornado watch is issued impacting the UCA area, Faulkner County, or Conway:


  1. Monitor local weather channels.

  2. Move to storm shelters when advised accordingly.

  3. Encourage residents to go to your assigned storm shelter location.

If a student is having a medical emergency, how do you provide aid?



Call UCA PD (or 9-1-1) and inform an Assistant Director.


You CANNOT provide first aid as a representative of the Department. If you choose to do so anyways, you are taking on the personal responsibility associated with that aid which could include litigation. You are discouraged from giving first aid. Unless you have a current certification to do so. 


Ask yourself:

Is immediate action needed to save a life?

Will I place myself in harm or jeopardy?

If immediate shelter in place is your best option during an active shooter situation, how do you create a safe shelter?



  • Lock and/or barricade doors.

  • Turn off lights.

  • Close blinds.

  • Block windows.

  • Turn off radios and other sound making devices.

  • Dim computer screens.

  • Keep calm, quiet, and out of sight.

  • To protect yourself from gunfire, take cover behind thick desks, behind cabinets or against concrete walls.

  • Silence all phones in the immediate area.

  • If injured, place sign in exterior window for first responders to see.

Assess Individual Situation


Your response to an active shooter emergency is situational. Options include:


Run - Move away from the incident.


Hide - take shelter in a secure location.


Fight - Actively engage the assailant(s).

In the event that a bomb threat is called into the duty phone, what are your immediate steps?



  • Do Not Hang Up. Ask informational questions:

    1. When is the bomb going to explode?

    2. Where is the bomb located?

    3. What kind of bomb is it?

    4. What will cause the bomb to explode?

    5. What does the bomb look like?

    6. Who placed the bomb?

    7. Why was the bomb placed?

    8. What is your name?

    9. Where are you calling from?

  • Regardless of your assessment, any threat is responded to as if it is real.

  • Pay special attention to the background noise and the voice of the caller to help determine their surroundings or any identifying information such as gender, age, etc.

  • Call 9-1-1.

  • If appropriate, evacuate the area and assist the Police in doing so.

  • Do not pull the fire alarm during a bomb threat, unless instructed by Police.

Staff should be alert to these behaviors that may indicate a suspicious situation.



  • People in the building who do not appear to be conducting legitimate business.

  • People “monitoring” areas, buildings, entrances, etc.

  • Unfamiliar people in the building/complex.

  • People wearing clothing not consistent with the weather conditions (bulky coats in warm weather

  • Unattended items in unusual areas.

  • Individuals attempting to access rooms or utility areas.

  • Vehicles containing unusual/suspicious materials or staying for long periods of time.
