The people in your dreams usually come from your memory (T/F)
True
There's no clear consensus about the purpose of dreams: some scientists believe that dreams are a rehearsal of possible threats you might live out in real life and that dreaming these events prepares you by activating a fight-or-flight response to face them (Threat Simulation Theory). This is just one theory of so many!
What is a coping skill?
Coping refers to conscious strategies used to reduce unpleasant emotions. Coping strategies can be cognitions or behaviours and can be individual or social. Coping is to deal with and overcome struggles and difficulties in life. It is a way for us to maintain our mental and emotional well-being.
Type of thinking in absolutes with words like "always" and "never". Example: "I never do a good enough job on anything"
All-or-nothing thinking
Bob ross's favorite thing to paint
Outdoor landscapes, specifically forests, mountains and animals
Your brain is still under construction (T/F)
True!
Brains are 90-95% of full size by 6yo, and the last 5% is being constructed in teenage years.
The two basic types of memory. For example, what you ate for breakfast this morning versus the rules to your favorite card game.
Short term memory and long term memory and
What's the point of deep breathing?
It slows the heartbeat and calms the adrenaline that comes with anxiety
This type of thinking is exaggerating or minimizing the importance of events, like thinking your own achievements are unimportant or thinking your mistakes are excessively important.
Magnification/minimization
This statement is something Bob Ross would say as he painted things into his art, usually trees
"Happy little tree" and "friends" also counts
The part of your brain responsible for decision-making
It's best to cram study material for a test in one sitting (T/F) AND include one reason why in your answer
False: short term memory can only hold about 7 items at a time. We can store items into long term memory better if we expose ourself to the material repeatedly, and put this information into our STM over and over.
Also, cramming induces panic and stress, both experiences that suck up a lot of energy in the brain. Less energy goes to remembering the information when you're in a stressed state.
Finally, when cramming sometimes you lose sleep. Sleep is one of the most important things for memory because REM sleep consolidates everything from the day into LTM.
Can doing your homework be self care? (Y/N)
Sure, anything that you do for yourself can be self care. Maybe you don't like actually doing your homework, but once it's completed you feel less anxious and it frees up your time to do something else in the afternoon
3 types of mind (HINT: think DBT with Allison)
Wise mind, emotion mind, reason mind
It took Bob on average this long to film a 13-episode season of The Joy of Painting
2 days
The age your brain is fully formed
25 yo
You can remember something better by...
Connecting feelings/stories with the information you are trying to remember
Alternate correct answer: meditation
Alternate correct answer: sleep but include WHY
What is box-breathing?
Step 1: Breathe in, counting to four slowly. Feel the air enter your lungs.
Step 2: Hold your breath for 4 seconds. Try to avoid inhaling or exhaling for 4 seconds.
Step 3: Slowly exhale through your mouth for 4 seconds.
Step 4: Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you feel re-centered
Interpreting the meaning of a situation with little/no evidence to support
Jumping to conclusions
Bob kept this pet in his pocket while filming (Bonus for getting the name too)
A squirrel named Peapod
This is the chemical in your brain responsible for "feeling happy" or "feeling good". (HINT: It's a neurotransmitter)
Dopamine
This substance can heavily impair memory, even after the substance leaves your system completely
Alcohol
Alcohol can destroy nerve cells in important areas of the brain for memory (hippocampus). Also, drinking alcohol can affect your sleep that night and block memory re-consolidation or the transferring of info from short-term to long-term memory
What is 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique?
5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste
The belief that things should always be a certain way. Example: "I should always be friendly"
Should statements
Bob created this many copies of each painting
3!!! One beforehand to hide off-camera to refer to, one while filming, and one final copy after filming for his "how-to" books (this one was supposed to be the best one). His assistant would stand behind him and take photos of his brush strokes while filming for the "how-to" books.
This is what happens to neural pathways in your brain when they get used often (HINT: think about when you form a habit)
Mylenation
