These are the last lines of Romeo and Juliet.  The Prince says these lines as he dismisses the mourners after the funeral.  He is saying what a sad day, even the sun won't come out today.  He tells everyone to leave to discuss what has happened.  Some of the people involved will be pardoned; some will be punished.  But, everyone knows that there will never be a story as sad as what happened with Romeo and Juliet.

Who said this quote?  What devices are being used, and how are they being used?

Let me see her. Out, alas! She’s cold.                     Her blood is settled, and her joints are stiff.           Life and these lips have long been separated.   Death lies on her like an untimely frost                   Upon the sweetest flower of all the field.

These lines are said by Lord Capulet when he sees his dead daughter.  There are two devices in this quote.  The first is personification. Lord Capulet says, "Death lies on her." Death cannot recline (as in lying in a bed) on anyone.  He also uses a simile.  He says that "death lies upon" Juliet  "like an untimely frost upon the sweetest flower of all the field."  Lord Capulet is saying that it is unnatural for such a young, beautiful, perfect flower to die of all the people in Verona.  He is describing how it makes no sense for someone so pretty and young to die, especially to take her own life.

While the Nurse if Juliet's confidante, the Friar is Romeo's. Compare and contrast these two as counselors.

The Nurse and the Friar are the only people who know about the relationship between Romeo and Juliet.  Both the Nurse and the Friar encourage the relationship and marriage of Romeo and Juliet.  They both help arrange the marriage and strive to make the couple happy.  Both the Nurse and the Friar break rules to create a  happy ending for the couple.  However, each confidante does so for different reasons.  The Nurse is almost part of the family.  The Nurse would do anything to see Juliet happy.  This love for Juliet is why the Nurse  attempts to please Juliet and forgets her place as the Nurse.  The Nurse has a duty to report to and be loyal to the mother.  (The  Nurse should never have encourage the relationship.)  The Friar also had his own motives for helping the couple.  The Friar hope the marriage of Romeo and Juliet would end the fighting between the Capulet and Montague families.  The Friar allowed his desire for peace to make him break rules.  He should have never married the couple without parental permission.  The Friar betrayed Paris and the Prince.
