Feelings are not good or bad, right or wrong, they are just feelings. You have a choice in how you express them, which can result in positive or negative consequences.

You are walking to school and hear tires screeching. You're startled by the noise and look around to see what is making the noise. You see that there is a car speeding toward you and the sound is the driver slamming on the breaks to stop the car. You immediately feel afraid and quickly jump out of the way.

Purpose: Alerting you of danger, to keep you safe in context of a real threat

Your best friend moved away and it's been several weeks since you last spoke with him. You start to think he's forgotten about you and that you'll never see him again. You feel start to feel like nothing else matters, you have no energy, and that you won't be able to have fun without your best friend, so there is no point in even trying.
What is: Sadness
Purpose: Sadness is a natural response to disappointment or loss. Sadness tells us that we need to take the time to mourn what was lost and the ways it has impacted your life.

Crying releases tension. Some scientists believe it releases stress hormones too, which is why we sometimes feel better after crying.

Halfway through your favorite TV show, you start to think that you haven't studied enough and that you won't do well. You notice your shoulders getting tight and your stomach begin to hurt. Purpose: Anxiety is worry about the future. It can sometimes help us reach a solution. At other times, we can get stuck in the worry.

I feel it, so it must be true.
What is: False
Sometimes emotions feel so strong or overwhelming that you believe they must be true. If you feel anxious, it doesn’t always mean that you are in danger. Emotions reflect thoughts and if your thoughts are inaccurate your emotions may be too. Emotions are natural responses based on what we believe and think.
You don't understand the teacher so you stare at him with scrunched eyebrows.

Someone tells you that a person you felt was your close friend has been saying awful things about you. The next day at school, you feel like you have to do something. You decide to tell other people an embarrassing secret about the person you thought was your close friend. When you see that person, you give her a mean look and walk away.
What is: Anger
Purpose: Anger is a natural response to the belief that you have been hurt or mistreated. Anger motivates us to take action to defend ourselves or what we care about.

You want to buy a new video game but do not have the money. At lunch, you notice a classmate has left a few dollars on his desk. You look around, quickly take the money, leave the classroom. When you get home, you start feeling badly about taking the money. You realize that your classmate may have needed the money for something and that you behaved inappropriately.

Purpose: Shame, guilt, or embarrassment are normal reactions to feeling like we made a mistake. These emotions want us to act by apologizing or learning from our actions.
