What is the central idea?

After we left home, we traveled by wagon to a town called Independence, Missouri. When we first got there, people were doing all sorts of things to prepare for the trip. Some were feeding their horses. Others were changing the wheels on their wagons. Many people were shopping for supplies at the stores in town.

Ma and Pa told me that we had a lot to do, too, before we could go on the 2,000-mile journey to Oregon. We already had a wagon and four horses, but once we got going on the trail, there would not be many places to stop for more supplies. So, we had to be sure we had everything we needed for six whole months on the Oregon Trail!

It was important to be prepared for the trip to Oregon.
