Why are we using the Term "Indigenous" in our class instead of "Aboriginal" or "Native"?
The term Aboriginal infers "not original" and is an outdated government word while Indigenous demonstrates a relationship with all things and was universally agreed upon by Indigenous representatives to the UN. Native also holds negative connotations that we try to avoid in our classroom.

What are two things you should "avoid" while in a Talking Circle?
If you do not have the talking stick/symbol, please give your attention and respect to the speaker.
Leave all technology (Phones, laptops, headphones, etc.) outside of the circle.
If you must leave the circle, you must wait until the round is finished to re-enter the circle.
Do not ask questions to the other members of the circle or speak in response.
When you speak it is your time to answer the question in your own words, not agree with other classmates. This can be done after.
What is the best way to describe someone's Indigeneity? (how they are Indigenous)
It is also best to describe someone based on the Nation that they are from, but if this is missing First Nations, Metis, or Inuit is appropriate. If you do not Know exactly what their Identity is, referring to someone as Indigenous is fine.
