Why? 

Millions of years ago, plants and tiny organisms used energy from the Sun to grow. When these organisms died, their remains were buried underground. Over a very long time, heat and pressure turned them into coal, oil, and natural gas, which we call fossil fuels.

The energy from the Sun became stored in the chemicals of the fuel. When we burn fossil fuels, that stored energy is released as heat and light.

Think of a car: The heat makes gases expand and push on parts of the engine (called pistons).
