What is the definition of energy?
The ability to cause change.
Look at the picture of the bookshelf. Which book has the most potential energy? How do you know?
B) They all have the same mass, but this one is the highest.
This person is using a bicycle to power his computer. Which option best shows the energy transformations taking place? Look at the multiple choice options on your worksheet.
C. mechanical --> electrical --> light + sound
What direction does thermal energy move when two objects touch?
From the warmer object to the colder object.
What form of energy is NOT present in the classroom?
Nuclear energy
As a car drives up hill, some kinetic energy is transformed into potential energy. What happens to the total amount of energy and how do you know?
The total amount of energy stays the same because energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transformed.
Use evidence to explain the trend in your graph. (603 use the graph from the brain starter.)
The trend in my graph shows that as the time increases (or goes by), the temperature of the water also increases. For example, at minute 1, the temperature was 2 degrees. At minute 5, the temperature was 28 degrees. Lastly, at minute 9, the temperature was 70 degrees.
What form of energy is found in both a battery and an apple?
Chemical energy
Write the energy transformations that occur as the people bike downhill. Daily Double!
potential + chemical -> kinetic + thermal
Explain why the blobs of wax rise and fall in a lava lamp. (Hint: What happens to the particles in convection?)
The wax on the bottom is heated up by the hot bulb. The particles start moving faster and farther apart, making the hot wax rise. When the wax cools at the top of the lamp, it becomes denser and sinks to the bottom.
Imagine you go to get a frozen coffee frappe (cold drink) from McDonalds. The drink is so cold it hurts your hands! What do you do to solve the problem, and why? Use your knowledge of thermal energy to answer the question.
Put ________ around the cup as an insulator. Or put gloves on as an insulator to stop heat from leaving your hands and going into the cup.
Thermal and Radiant- Sun
Thermal- Gas grill
Kinetic- cars
Potential- baseball
California has stopped selling the old incandescent light bulbs, and now only sells new LED bulbs. Why do you think they did that? Think about the forms of energy that are produced when energy is transformed in a lamp.
The new bulbs save energy and money because less of their energy is transformed into heat. We don't need heat with our light, so when some of it comes off as heat, it's a waste of energy.
A chair with metal arms has been sitting in the sun for a few hours. Michael sits in the chair, and then jumps up in pain. Explain what happened using at least two pieces of thermal energy vocabulary.
Radiation caused the heat from the sun to warm up the chair. When Michael sat down, the thermal energy transferred to him through conduction. That's why he was burned and jumped in pain.
A roller coaster car is driven to the top of the first hill. Which roller coaster will have enough kinetic energy to carry it over the second hill? How do you know?
The roller coaster where the second hill is smaller than the first. This is true because kinetic energy will never been greater than the potential energy it started with. The ones with bigger hills requires more energy than what they started with.
