The independent variable is that variable that is ...

changed

100

Kinetic energy is the energy of ...

movement

100

Which trial will result in the most energy transfer from the weight to a nail?

Tall height and Heavy Weight

or

Short height and Light Weight

Tall height and Heavy Weight

100

What is potential energy?

stored energy (no movement)

200

The dependent variable is the variable that is ...

observed

200

Thermal energy is a type of what kind of energy?

kinetic

200

If you shake a bottle of rocks, what types of energy are present?

Kinetic and Thermal

200

Thermal energy occurs when what is happening?

Particles of an object are moving/bouncing off of each other.

300

You are testing the effect of different fertilizers on plant growth. What is the independent variable?

type of fertilizer
300

The total amount of energy in the universe always remains the same because of ...

the law of conservation of energy

300

In the winter, does a home in Texas or a home in New York use more energy?

New York (use the heater)

300

Potential energy is greater when an object is higher or lower in the air?

Higher

400

You are testing the effect of different fertilizers on plant growth. What is the dependent variable?

plant growth

400

Does conservation of energy and conserving energy mean the same thing?

NO. Conservation of energy means that the total amount of energy remains the same. Conserving energy is something an individual can do to use less energy in their life (turn off the lights).

400

Explain how potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy and vice versa on a roller coaster.

When the car is at the top of a hill, is has potential energy. When is rolls down a hill, the potential energy is transformed into kinetic energy. At the bottom of the hill, it has the most kinetic energy and no potential energy. As is goes back up, the kinetic energy is transformed back into potential energy.

400

Potential energy is greater for heavier or lighter objects?

Heavier

500

Identify the independent and dependent variable.

You are testing how far a ball rolls down a hill based on the angle of the hill. The same ball is used for each trial.

Independent = angle of hill

Dependent = how far the ball rolls.

500

Explain energy transformation

One type of energy is converted into another type of energy. (potential energy is transformed to kinetic energy when something starts moving)

500

Which home is more energy efficient?

A - LED lights, no window film, no vegetation, electric air conditioner

B - Incandescent lights, window treatment, lots of vegetation, high efficiency appliances.

Home B

500

Explain the term "energy transfer"

Energy is transferred from one object to another or one place to another. A ball is rolling (kinetic energy) and it hits another ball causing the second ball to start moving (kinetic energy)
