Give two real life examples of conduction
foot on hot concrete, ice cube in hand, holding hands, etc.
Anything where two objects are in CONTACT
If something is hot, is it more or less dense?
Less dense
Define radiation
energy that travels in rays or waves
A cat is strolling along on a sunny day. The cat notices his paws feel warmer on the black asphalt than the light colored sidewalk. Why is this?
Black absorbs light and heat, lighter colors reflect it.
What is a group of skunks called?
A stench!
Give two real life examples of convection
lava lamp, sea breezes, hot air balloons, hot water on a stove, etc.
As long as hot fluids(gas or liquid) rise and cold fluids sink
If something is cooler, is it more or less dense?
More dense
(This isn't a definition)
Why do hot fluids rise and cold fluids sink?
Things with more energy (hotter) have their particles moving faster, so the particles move farther apart. Things with less energy (colder) have their particles moving slower, so the particles stay closer together.
Carl the cat would like to tell you to study your graphs.
"Your welcome," says Carl.
What is a group of jellyfish?
A smack!
Give two real life examples of something that gives off radiation
The Sun, heat lamps, lightbulbs, etc.
Anything that the energy is transferring without touching
You squeeze some hot water into a room temperature water vial. Where would the water settle?
At the top
Define conduction
energy transfer by contact
Carl the cat wants to know what causes wind. Tell him.
Convection/ uneven heating of Earth
What is the major source of energy for Earth?
The Sun
Describe the energy transfer that happens as an ice cube melts in your hand
Conduction- Kinetic energy from your hand transfers into the ice cube causing it to melt
You have a mug of hot chocolate (congratulations) and it starts to cool down. What could cause this?
Air particles collide (conduction) and take the kinetic energy from the drink, some energy can radiate out of the drink
Define convection
energy transfer where hot fluids rise and cold fluids sink, creating a cycle
Carl the cat wants a rug that will heat up the most for his afternoon naps. Rank his rugs from warmest to coolest:
A: A woven rug that is 1/4 black and the rest is white
B: A rug that has equal parts black and white
C: A black rug
D: A white rug
C, B, A, D
How long can a cockroach live without a head?
About a week
Give me an example of something that has all three energy transfers present
A pot of water heating over a fire:
radiation: energy from the fire travels to the pot
conduction: the pot's particles collide with the water particles, giving them energy
convection: the hotter water at the bottom of the pot gains energy, becomes less dense, and rises
The water at the top cools down, becomes more dense and sinks
Describe the densities of fluids at different points of the convection cycle. You can draw a picture to help.
What are fluids?
Liquids or gases
Carl wants to make his own hot tub. Which of these set ups would give Carl the warmest water?
A. A black pool with no cover
B. A white pool that is covered until he slides in
C. A white pool with no cover
A
What is a group of buffalo called?
A gang or obstinacy!
