Name two simple machines on a bicycle and explain how we use them when riding a bicycle.
We hold the handlebars and use these to change directions. The handlebars are levers.
The pedals are levers, too. We push the pedals with our feet, and when the pedals turn around, the wheels of the bicycle turn around, too.
When we want to go up or down a hill, we use our hands to change the gear controls. The gears are pulleys and the force travels along the chain to the back wheel.
When we want to stop the bicycle, we use our hands to push and pull the brake levers. This force travels along cables to the brakes. The brakes press against the wheels and this force slows the speed of the bicycle.
