How does Alicia’s father treat her efforts to get an education?

her father says she shouldn't be up late anyway because "a woman's place is sleeping so she can wake up early with the tortilla star" and make lunches for the family. Alicia is the oldest daughter which means she "inherited her mama's rolling pin and sleepiness." She is expected to take care of her mother's chores without question. Her father does not support her studying because it may interfere with her ability to get up early and make the tortillas like her mother once did. He refuses to honor Alicia's dream.

Briefly analyze this excerpt, "All brown all around, we are safe. But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees go shakity-shake and our car windows get rolled up tight and our eyes look straight. Yeah. That is how it goes and goes."

This quote refers to Esperanza’s sense of self, which is in part informed by her cultural identity. Esperanza is saying that in her neighborhood, they are surrounded by people who look like them and face the same struggles that they do because of their race. She recognizes that people of different colors who come into their neighborhood are afraid, unnecessarily, because of their own prejudices and racism.

What does "my mother's hair...is the warm smell of bread before you bake it" mean in The House on Mango Street?

This is a beautiful example of figurative language meant to create an emotion in the reader and help them make connections to the text beyond what it clearly stated. In this quote, the protagonist, Esperanza, describes her mother by telling us about her hair. We can understand that her mother is a kind, generous, warm, and safe person. She, like her hair, attracts and welcomes while also providing a sense of security and warmth; as long as her mother is there, Esperanza has a place to call home.
