What is Argument?
Evokes a rational, reasonable response. Evidence and proof provide support
What is Logos?
You say that if we allow A to happen then Z will eventually happen so we shouldn't allow A to happen.
What is Slippery Slope?
Parris said to Danforth that Proctor is guilty of witchcraft because he does not “come to church but once in a month”
What is Ad Hominem?
That is not possible because he got the idea from a science fiction film.
What is Genetic?
A statement you believe is true and will attempt to prove
What is Claim?
Demonstrates the author’s reliability and competence. Shows respect for the audience’s ideas and moral values.
What is Ethos?
You attacked your opponent's character or personal traits in an attempt to undermine their argument
What is Ad Hominem?
You said that the burden of proof lies not with the person making the claim, but with someone else to disprove
What is Burden of Proof?
If students are required to wear uniforms to school, they'll do less shopping at local clothing stores. With less business, the stores will close, which will hurt our local economy.
What is Slippery Slope?
Boxer's slogan that “Napoleon is always right”
What is Hasty Generalization?
The facts that prove your claim
What is Evidence?
Evokes an emotional response, sometimes an irrational one.
What is Pathos?
You misrepresented someone's argument to make it easier to attack
What is Strawman?
You use a piece of evidence in a misleading way or distracting way to move the argument in the direction you want it to go
What is Red Herring?
A parent tells their child they can't see their friends tonight and the child responds, “Why do you hate me?”
What is Strawman?
Son: "Wow, Dad, it's really hard to make a living on my salary."
Father: "Consider yourself lucky, son. Why, when I was your age, I only made $40 a week."
