What is the origin of drama?

Originally, tragedies were performed at religious festivals, such as rituals praising Dionysos, where songs were performed by mask-wearing worshippers. The word tragedy comes from the Greek roots trag meaning ‘goat’ and odia meaning ‘song’. Some actors dressed in the skins of goats to represent satyrs, goat-like mythological deities, symbols for Dionysos.

a type of play where everything is hyperbolized. The themes are usually simple and there are many stereotypes, such as scary villains, likable heroes and beautiful heroines. Melodrama first appeared in France at the end of the 18th century. Later, it reached Britain and became one of the most popular types of drama in the 19th century.

What is the difference between verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony?

Verbal irony is when you say the opposite of what you mean. (Macbeth tells Banquo, "I think not of them" (2.1.23), when referring to the witches.)

Dramatic irony is when the audience or reader knows something that the characters don't. (Duncan praises Macbeth's loyalty)

Situational irony is when the opposite of what is expected happens, often to humorous effect. (Lady Macbeth initially appears stronger and more ruthless than Macbeth,  but later, she is plagued by guilt and descends into madness.)
