Through a feminist theory lens, Trevor's mother Patricia can be seen as challenging gender stereotypes for women in South Africa, particularly black women, she does this by having Trevor with a white man, getting a job that Black women in SA typically werent allowed to have, and reports does not act subsurvient to the men in her life, she is an independent woman and this shows Trevor that women deserve respect, which he remembers as he grows older.
