Describe indications of a compressor stall.

Depends on severity of the stall. Mild pulsation, aircraft vibration, loud bangs

100

What are the two types of electric current

Alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC)

100

The tendency of a fuel to vaporize refers to its:

Volatility

100

What is Pascal's Law

Pressure applied to an enclosed or confined liquid is transmitted equally in all directions without loss and acts with equal force on equal surfaces.

100

What are the different types of starters?

DC electric motor and air turbine

List the 4 mechanical malfunctions

1. Variable inlet guide vane and stator vane.                                               2.Fuel control Unit                                 3. Foreign Object Damage                         4. Variable exhaust nozzle

200

Transformer rectifiers produce what type of electric current?

DC from an AC input

200

What type of fuel is used during shipboard operations? Why?

JP-5, it is less volatile and has a higher flashpoint.

200

What do hydraulic systems multiply?

Force.

200

Where would you fine the hottest air (high pressure or low pressure compressor)?

HIGH PRESSUREEEEEEEEE

300

Talk through relative wind and AOA in terms of compressors

Relative wind is formed by combining RPM and inlet airflow. AOA for the compressor is this relative wind and rotor blade's chord line. ANything that decreases inlet airflow or increases compressor RPM will increase AOA. Too high AOA can cause a stall

300

What provides a constant rotational input to the generator regardless of engine RPM?

Constant speed drive (CSD)

300

What part does the FCU play during engine starts?

Sends pressure signal to close the dump valve at engine start

300

What are the two types of power pumps used to generate fluid pressure in hydraulic systems?

Constant displacement and variable displacement pumps.

300

What is the most common type of large gas generator starter?

Air turbine starter

400

What automatically compensates for acceleration and deceleration schedules to help prevent stalls?

Fuel control unit

400

If equipped, what does an APU provide?

Emergency power on or power during ground operations

400

What cuts off fuel flow during engine shutdown

The FCU

400

Why is a relief valve included in a hydraulic system?

As a safety backup in case of over pressurization of the hydraulic system.

400

What type of igniter plugs are used in gas turbine engine ignition systems?

Annular gap and constrained gap

500

Describe airflow distortion

Most common cause of compressor stall. At high AOA. air entering inlet slows and becomes turbulent. If the the velocity of incoming air changes or the speed of rotor blades changes, AOA changes and may become excessive, increasing risk of compressor stall. Instances: Abrupt change in aircraft attitude, air turbulence, rapid throttle movement, deficiency of air velocity or volume.

500

Distribution of electrical energy is accomplished by a system?

Bus

500

What component measures the proper amount of fuel flow to the afterburner?

Afterburner fuel control unit

500

What is the purpose of the actuating cylinder?

Converts fluid energy into mechanical motion.

500

How many igniter plugs does each engine utilize?
