Difference between historical materialism & idealism

Idealism: There is a fundamental human ‘spirit’ which is aimed towards freedom. All of human history is unfolding in some fashion towards absolute freedom (in a dialectical process). Material conditions of life in human history are the by-product of this dialectical process

Materialism: Humans are fundamentally constituted by & affected by their material environments. All of human history can be read as a description of humans’ interactions with their material conditions (primarily their means of subsistence & production, like access to food, tools, land, work, water). Ideals in human history (extrapolated to political, cultural & social structures) only change in response to material conditions changing
