Literary Devices
It is a technique that writers use to create a specific effect in their writing, to convey information, or to help readers understand their writing on a deeper level. It can also be used in writing for emphasis or clarity.
What is a literary device?
A note of additional information made in a text that includes some sort of explanation or comment.
What is an annotation?
Abilities you use when giving and receiving different kinds of information.
What are communication skills?
The ability to use one's time effectively or productively, especially when working on a project.
What is time management?
When someone gives his/her attention to a sound.
What is listening?
A thing that stands for or represents a larger overarching idea.
What is a symbol?
The annotation used when a character does something that contrasts with what you'd expect or contradicts earlier choices.
What is the contrasts and contradictions annotation?
The act of looking directly into one another's eyes.
What is eye contact?
The action of not delaying or postponing something.
What is the opposite of procrastination?
When people and/or groups work together toward/for a common benefit or goal.
What is cooperation?
A direct comparison between two unlike things that actually have important qualities in common.
What is a metaphor?
The annotation when a word, phrase, or situation is mentioned over and over.
What is the repetition annotation?
Paying attention to the person who is communicating with you.
You can do this by focusing on the speaker, avoiding distractions like cell phones, laptops or other projects, and by preparing questions, comments or ideas to thoughtfully respond.
What is active listening?
The process of thinking about the activities required to achieve a desired goal.
What is planning?
The action of taking part in (doing) something.
What is participation?
An indirect or passing reference to a person, place, idea or thing of literary, cultural, political, or historical significance. The author assumes that the reader understands the reference without explanation.
What is an allusion?
The annotation when something in the texts gives you an idea or enhances your understanding of the characters, the story, or society.
What is the light bulb moment annotation?
Verbal, non-verbal, written, visual.
What are the types of communication?
Determining the order for dealing with (a series of items or tasks) according to their relative importance.
What is prioritizing?
Skills used to interact and communicate with other people, verbally or non-verbally.
What are social skills?
The comparing and contrasting of two or more different (and usually opposite) ideas, characters, or objects by placing them "together" in a story.
(Example: "It was the best of time, it was the worst of times...")
What is a juxtaposition?
The annotation for any text that stands out to you, but doesn't fit into the other annotations categories. You use this annotation for text that you find particularly beautiful, interesting, and/or informative.
What is the wild card annotation?
Admiration for someone due to their abilities, qualities, or achievements.
A way of treating and thinking about someone.
What is respect?
A rate of activity, progress, and performance.
What is pacing?
The level of a person's participation in the classroom, community, or society.
