The Pilgrims were hoping to escape religious persecution and establish a colony where they could worship God according to their beliefs.

Planters took advantage of the lazy rivers of the South to transport goods to port cities to be sold on to Europe.

New England has many swift-running rivers. They built sawmills powered by water to turn rough timber into lumber for shipbuilding and the construction of homes and businesses.

John Winthrop preached a sermon called A Model of Christian Charity and claimed that Massachusetts Bay Colony should be a City upon a Hill

What did he mean by that?

Winthrop was borrowing an example Jesus used in the Sermon on the Mount. He meant that this new Puritan colony could be an example to the world of what a real Christian community should look like and glorify God.

Grains grew well in the moderate climate of the Mid-Atlantic region.  Grain is ground into flour to bake bread.

Why is that such a big deal?

The Mayflower Compact was a very early step in establishing a tradition of self-government in America. By pledging their submission and obedience these men promised to honor majority rule and obey the laws of Plymouth Colony.

The distance between Great Britain and America and the travel time required to send a message and wait for a reply made it impractical for local decisions to be made across the Atlantic in England.
