ENTERTAIN
This part of poetry is made up of lines. It can be defined by the number of lines it contains. This is to poetry as a paragraph is to prose.
Stanzas
The beginning of an essay
Introduction
When the text plainly and clearly states the elements of a character
Direct Characterization
An author's specific choice of words. We can determine things like tone, mood, overall attitude, and the author's style of writing.
DICTION
To convince the reader that they should believe what the author is telling them
PERSUADE
Language which paints a picture in the minds of the reader - appealing to all of the reader’s senses.
Sensory Imagery
The end of an essay -restates the thesis or claim.
Conclusion
When the text gives you the elements of the character in subtle, less explicit ways
Indirect Characterization
A clue at how the author feels about the subject. We can determine this based on the author’s diction and other literary devices used. Can be the feeling of the entire text or smaller parts.
TONE
Giving the reader new knowledge
TO INFORM
A device which attributes humanlike qualities to non-human objects or creatures
Personification
The majority of the essay - where the information is given to the reader. Includes Topic Sentences.
Body Paragraphs
The secondary action of the story, related to the main action but not as pivotal
Sub-Plot
Presenting an idea as less important than it actually is.
UNDERSTATEMENT
To show the experience of the author or their specific feelings on a subject.
TO EXPRESS
Comparison of two unlike things - extremely important in poetry
Metaphor
The beginning of a body paragraph - like a more specific thesis statement.
Topic Sentences
How the author makes you see, hear, smell, etc. what is happening in the text
Sensory Imagery
A figure of speech with words that contradict each other
OXYMORON
To make comments about society and the problems as human beings
TO CRITIQUE
Things which affect how the poem looks when read. It can include abnormal capitalization or grammar and punctuation, line length or word spacing.
Graphic Elements
The main idea of the text communicated to the reader in the introduction - usually the last sentence of the introduction.
Thesis Statement or Claim
When the series of events in a story occur in directly sequential order
