What is 360 minutes?

What is Entering (beginner) level?
This is what ENL was named before NYS changed its name in 2014.
What is ESL (English as a Second Language)?
This period in the language acquisition process refers to the initial stage when a learner is actively absorbing a new language by listening and observing, but is not yet producing much spoken language themselves.
What is the silent period or pre-production period?
This certification is a credential that prepares educators to teach English to non-native speakers. It's required to teach English in many settings, including traditional classrooms, online, and abroad.
What is TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages)?
The majority of the ELLs in our district was born in this country.
What is the United States of America?
A student at this level level shows GREAT INDEPENDENCE in advancing academic language skills and is approaching the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts (settings).
What is the Expanding (advanced) level?
This is the test that ALL ELLs must take each spring in order to determine language proficiency levels.
What is the NYSESLAT (New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test)?
This program is a teaching method that allows students to learn in two languages. Students learn to read, write, and speak in both languages.
What is the Dual Language Program?
ELLs at these levels require 180/minutes weekly of ENL service as per NYS guidelines.
What are Transitioning and Expanding levels?
This South Asian country is where the majority of our Urdu and Pushto native speakers are from.
What is Pakistan?
This level is also known as the intermediate level.
What is Transitioning level?
This is a diverse group of students, with different language, academic, and social-emotional needs.
What are ELLs (English Language Learners)?
"BICS" stands for Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills, and for ELLs, it generally takes around this number years to develop these basic conversational skills needed for everyday social interactions, like talking with friends on the playground or in casual conversations.
What is 1-3 years?
This is another name for a co-teaching model when a content area and ENL teacher collaborate on teaching a classroom of general ed students and ELLs.
What is integrated teaching?
This is the total percentage of ELLs in our district.
What is 15%?
A student at this level level has met the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts (settings).
A student at this level is no longer considered an ELL student, but is entitled to receive two years of Former ELL services.
What is Commanding (proficient) level?
This degree prepares students to teach English to non-native speakers. This degree can be earned at the Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral level.
What is TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages)?
This is a form that parents or guardians fill out when enrolling their child in school to identify if a language other than English is spoken at home, thus determining if the student might need additional support as an ELL; it typically asks about the languages spoken, understood, read, and written within the household.
What is HLQ (Home Language Questionnaire)?
An ELL scheduled for a Language Proficiency Team (LPT) meeting must require this document in order to consider evidence to make a recommendation as to whether the student may have second language acquisition needs and must take the NYSITELL OR makes the recommendation that the disability may be the determinant factor affecting the student's ability to demonstrate.
What is an IEP (Individualized Education Plan)?
This K-2 school and 3-5 school in the district are home to the Sheltered Instruction Program.
What is Brook Avenue School and Gardiner Manor School?
This level is one level higher than the Entering level and students are this level require 360/minutes of ENL services weekly.

This is the test that assesses a student's English language proficiency.
