What are the hours of the Enrollment Center?

The hours are Monday to Friday 7 am to 7 pm

What can you buy with CalFresh?

  • Foods for the household to eat, such as:
    • Bread and cereals
    • Fruit and vegetables
    • Meat, fish and poultry; and
    • Dairy products
  • Seeds and plants which produce food for the household to eat.

 If a client is 21 and lives with parents but does not share food with them. Can they apply on their own?

No, for the CalFresh program you need to be 22 and older. You are not considered an adult until 22.

Can seniors receive Calfresh and still get other programs for food?

Yes, you can receive CalFresh, Meals-on-Wheels, and also go to Senior Centers/Communal Dining Facilities. One does not disqualify you from the other.

Can you use your EBT Card online?

You can use your EBT card to purchase groceries online at Amazon and Walmart.

A woman wants to apply for the program. She mentions that she is currently separated (technically still married) and they live in the same home. She does not share food. They have 2 children  together. Can she apply by herself with her and her 2 children?

She is unable to apply alone with her children due to them having children together. She would need to apply as a household of 4. The only way she can apply on her own is if she moves or her ex partner moves out.

How many hours does a student have to work to have an eligibility exemption?

They need to work at least 20 hours a week.

What is the amount of days that the county takes to process documents?

10 days. They take 10 days to process documents, this does not include weekends or holidays.If a client submits documents in person to an FRC always let them know to get a receipt, this is their proof in case documents get lost.

Does Enrollment Center assist with in person appointments?

No, we only phone based in which we do 45 minute appts or longer depending on household size

What are items that you cannot buy with CalFresh?

Households CANNOT use CalFresh benefits to buy:

  • Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco
  • Any nonfood items, such as
    • Pet foods;
    • Soaps, paper products; and
    • Household supplies
  • Vitamins and medicines
  • Food that will be eaten in the store
  • Hot foods

Adriana wants to apply for Calfresh she mentions she lives with her boyfriend and his parents. She is 19 years old. Can she apply on her own?

She is able to apply alone even if she is under 22 since she does not live with her parents.

A client is undocumented and wants to apply they mentioned they have refugee or asylum status. Can they apply for Calfresh?

Yes, if a client has an approved status for refugee or asylum and does not have it pending they can apply. 

When clients apply for a u-visa or t-visa regardless of their status, even if its pending they may be eligible due to their safety being in danger.

After we complete an application what is the process we follow?

After we complete and application we follow up with client for 30 days. 60 days if case is pending.

What are the languages Enrollment Center assists with?

English, Spanish and Cantonese. We also have the language line that assists with over 200 languages

The Restaurant Meals Program is...

The restaurant Meals Program is for any client that may be unhoused or may not have a place to cook food in. Clients are able to get warm meals at certain restaurants. The county makes that determination.

A grandmother wants to apply. She mentions it is very hard due to the increase in food prices. She says that she lives alone but babysits her grandchildren everyday. Can she include them in her application?

She has to apply alone. Babysitting children does now allow you to add them to your case unless you are the legal guardian.

Can a minor apply on their own if they do not live with parents?

Minors who live with an adult who is not their parent (ex: aunt, uncle, adult sibling, family friend, grandparents, etc), usually must apply with that individual(s) and cannot apply on their own because they are still considered under their “parental control.”

Are we able to check cases for client on county system?

If we have assisted a client and they have a pending application we can check their case on Calsaws. If they client calls Enrollment Center and wants an update on their case and they applied either online, in person or  by mail they would need to call Access- 1-866-262-9881

Can the authorized representative someone that is on the case?

No, the authorized representative has to be someone that isnt on the case. Someone the client trusts.

A foster family wants to apply, they want to add their foster child but that would make them over income. What would you tell them?

They can opt and not add them to their case if that makes them over income

Can refugees and asyles apply?

They can even if undocumented but they need to be approved as refugees or asylees.

How often do we need to follow up with clients? What if clients do not respond? 

We follow up with clients once a week. The first follow up should always be a call. There will be clients that will not respond, we still need to check their case for updates. There will be clients that you will never hear from again.
