What is the length requirement for the diagnostic speech?
2-3 minutes

Is a student allowed to miss a speech day?
no--unless he/she has provided me with documentation.

Does a student need to provide a manuscript for all speeches?
No (there will only be one speech that requires a manuscript). Instead, the student will use an outline to jog his/her memory of key words, phrases, etc. An outline MUST be turned in with the speech. You may use notecards in addition to the required outline.

What is the difference between encoding or decoding a message?
Encoding a message involves putting thoughts into words and gestures. Decoding is taking gestures, words, etc. and making it into meanings (think of decoding in the army).

Communication with others to help us establish, maintain, and disengage from relationships with other people

What is the policy for missing assignments?

What is the procedure if you come into class late during a speech day?
You must wait until the speaker has finished his/her speech and you hear applause before entering the room.

The channel is a form a message takes (verbal, written, etc.)

What kind of speech is the diagnostic speech?
Extemporaneous speech--a speech that is not read from a manuscript, but rather given conversationally using an outline

What does "communication is culturally specific" mean?
Our speech is culturally informed (jargon, gestures, proxemics)

What is the importance of context?
Context (setting, environment, etc.) changes the way we speak. If I am presenting a speech to a conference it may be different than if I am presenting a speech to my peers.

How is attendance recorded?
The student is responsible for signing the attendance sheet daily--I will not remind you.

In addition to recognizing the culture in which we are speaking to, what is one way to give a successful speech?
Make eye contact with your audience, use appropriate inflection in your voice, avoid swaying side-to-side, etc.
