The cotton gin was a machine that removed the black seeds from cotton much faster than people working by hand. It could clean as much cotton in one day as 50 people could do by hand.

California would become a free state. This made the North happy. ALSO added a new law to make the South happy: all runaway slaves had to be returned to their owners.

What effect did factories have on cities?
More and more people moved to find work, small factory towns grew into cities. New buildings went up. Streets were paved. Shops opened to sell clothes and food to busy factory workers.

Slaves were not free. They could not choose where to live or how to make a living. Slaves could be bought and sold. Their families could be separated. They were not paid for their work. They worked looooong hours. If they were too sick to work, they were punished.
